Toll Tags, Dashcams and Stickers After a Windscreen Replacement

Toll Tags, Dashcams and Stickers After a Windscreen Replacement

Before your windscreen is replaced, it is worth thinking about everything stuck to it. Toll tags, dashcams, parking permits and phone mounts all need to come off the old glass, and some need care when they go back on.

Before the Job: What to Remove

  • Toll tag — remove it from its holder and keep it somewhere safe. Leaving it in the car is fine; leaving it on the old glass is not.
  • Dashcam — unplug it and remove it from its mount. Note where the cable was routed.
  • Parking permits and stickers — most adhesive permits cannot be moved without damage, so check with the issuer about a replacement.
  • Phone mounts and suction-cup accessories — take them off and store them.

Our guide to what to expect on the day of your windscreen replacement covers the rest of the preparation.

Do I Need to Move a Rego Sticker?

Not for most cars. NSW stopped issuing windscreen registration labels for light vehicles in January 2013. Some vehicle types were treated differently, so if your vehicle still carries a label, check with Service NSW.

Refitting Your Toll Tag

Toll tags are usually mounted on the windscreen behind the rear-view mirror. Most new tag holders come with fresh adhesive strips; if yours does not, Linkt can supply a replacement holder.

  • Wait until the windscreen adhesive has cured before pressing anything firmly onto the glass — see how long after a windscreen replacement you can drive.
  • Clean the glass where the tag will go so the adhesive grips.
  • Some windscreens have a metallic or UV-reflective coating that can block the tag’s signal. These usually have a designated area, often near the rear-view mirror, where the tag will work. Check your vehicle handbook or Linkt’s guidance for metallic windscreens.
  • Keep the tag clear of any camera or sensor housing.

If the tag does not beep at the next toll point, contact your tag provider — it is best to sort it out before toll notices arrive.

Refitting Your Dashcam

  • Mount it where it does not block your view or the vehicle’s own camera. The area directly in front of a driver-assistance camera must be kept clear — see how to tell if your windscreen has a camera.
  • Use a fresh adhesive pad rather than the old one.
  • Re-route the cable along the headliner and pillar trim. Avoid running it across airbag areas in the pillars.
  • Check the angle and recording before you rely on it.

Cars With Driver-Assistance Cameras

If your car has a windscreen camera, the area around it is part of a calibrated system. Accessories mounted in front of the camera, or a replacement windscreen that has not been calibrated, can affect features like lane-keep assist and automatic braking. Calibration costs vary by vehicle and are quoted separately; Aussie AutoGlass coordinates with specialist calibration providers where it’s needed. See whether your car needs ADAS recalibration.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the technician move my toll tag to the new windscreen?

We can leave it out for you to refit once the adhesive has cured. Refitting it yourself makes sure it ends up where your tag provider recommends.

Will my dashcam still work after the replacement?

Yes — the dashcam is unaffected. You just need a new adhesive pad and to re-route the cable.

Why does my toll tag not work on the new windscreen?

The most common reasons are a metallic-coated windscreen or the tag being mounted outside the area where its signal can get through. Contact your tag provider for advice.

Will the tint strip at the top be the same?

Most replacement windscreens include a shade band if the original had one. Ask when you book if this matters to you.
