Some cars come with a solar-control windscreen, designed to reflect part of the sun’s heat before it reaches the cabin. In a Sydney summer that can make a real difference to comfort — and it affects a few things when the glass is replaced.
Solar-control or heat-reflective windscreens have an extra treatment, often a very thin metallic or infrared-reflective layer within the laminated glass, that reflects part of the sun’s heat. Other windscreens use a tinted interlayer that absorbs heat instead. Both are different from aftermarket tint film — see benefits of window tinting.
Metallic coatings can block radio signals. Cars with these windscreens usually have a designated area, often near the mirror, where toll tags work. If your tag stops beeping after a replacement, check where it is mounted — see toll tags and dashcams after a windscreen replacement.
If a solar-control windscreen is replaced with standard glass, the car is still safe, but the cabin may get hotter and the air conditioning will work harder. Matching the original keeps the car performing as intended. Giving us your registration or VIN helps us source the right glass. Windscreen replacement with Aussie AutoGlass starts from $330, depending on your vehicle.
No. It is built into the glass during manufacture. Tint film is applied afterwards.
