A windscreen replacement is a structural bonding job, not a panel swap, and the steps exist for good reasons. The whole process usually takes a couple of hours of work, plus adhesive curing time before it is safe to drive. Knowing what each stage is for makes it easier to judge whether a job has been done properly.
Every replacement follows broadly the same sequence, whether it is done in a workshop or in your driveway:

Two stages separate a proper job from a cheap one. The first is pinch weld preparation — trimming old adhesive to a thin even layer and priming any exposed metal. Skipping it is invisible on the day and causes leaks and bond failure later. The second is respecting cure time. Urethane reaches safe drive-away strength on a schedule set by the product and the weather, and no amount of hurrying changes the chemistry. If someone hands you the keys immediately, that is a red flag.

Our starting prices are the same across greater Sydney, with no call-out fee:
| Service | Starting From |
|---|---|
| Stone Chip and Crack Repairs | $110 |
| Windscreen Replacement | $330 |
| Body Glass Replacement | $165 |
| Resealing | $165 |
| Scratch Removal | $110 |
| Window Tinting | $250 |
The final figure depends on your vehicle, the glass specification and whether calibration is needed. We confirm it before starting. See what windscreen replacement costs in Sydney for a fuller breakdown.
At the end of the job you should be given a specific safe drive-away time, told to leave retention tape in place, advised to avoid high-pressure washes for a day or two, and told to leave a window slightly open when closing doors so cabin pressure does not push on fresh glass. If your vehicle has a windscreen camera, you should also be told how and when ADAS recalibration was or will be completed.

The fitting itself is usually a couple of hours. The longer factor is adhesive cure time before it is safe to drive, which depends on the product and the weather on the day.
The urethane begins curing on contact and the bead is set to a specific height. Lifting and re-setting the glass disturbs the bead profile and compromises the bond, which is why accurate first-time placement matters.
The painted metal channel the glass bonds to. Preparing and priming it correctly is what makes the bond durable. Poor preparation here is the most common hidden cause of later leaks.
Yes, provided the bonding surface stays dry. A garage or carport is ideal in wet weather. In dry conditions an open driveway is fine.
