If your car has a heads-up display, the windscreen contains a special wedge-shaped interlayer, and fitting standard glass will give you a ghosted double image. This is the single most specification-sensitive windscreen type on the road. The HUD projects onto the glass, and without the wedge layer the reflection off the inner and outer surfaces separates into two overlapping images.
A standard windscreen has two parallel glass layers. Light reflecting off each surface produces two images, offset by the thickness of the glass — normally invisible because you are looking through the screen, not at a projection on it. HUD glass solves this by using a wedge-shaped interlayer, slightly thicker at the top than the bottom, which brings the two reflections into alignment. Fit parallel glass and the HUD shows a permanent blurry double image that cannot be adjusted out.

If your dash projects speed or navigation onto the windscreen in your line of sight, you have a HUD. Some vehicles use a small pop-up plastic combiner panel instead of projecting onto the glass itself — those do not need special windscreen glass, so it is worth knowing which type you have. If the image appears directly on the windscreen rather than on a separate clear panel, it is the glass-projected kind and the specification matters.

HUD windscreens sit at the higher end of the price range because of the specialised interlayer and the low production volumes relative to standard glass. Lead time can also be longer, particularly for less common models. Give us the make, model, year and build month when you enquire so we can confirm availability and price before you commit. These screens almost always carry an ADAS camera too, so ADAS recalibration will be part of the job.

You get a permanent ghosted double image on the projection. It cannot be corrected by adjusting the HUD, because the cause is the glass geometry rather than the projector.
If the display appears directly on the windscreen in your line of sight, yes. If it appears on a small clear plastic panel that rises from the dash, that is a combiner HUD and does not require special glass.
Yes, noticeably. The wedge interlayer is a specialised component produced in lower volumes. We confirm the exact figure for your vehicle before starting.
The HUD itself generally does not, but the ADAS camera almost always fitted to these vehicles does. We coordinate that as part of the job.
