Why We Need Auto Glass Motor Vehicle Repairer License

From 1 November 2021, if you operated the motor vehicle repair business in NSW, you will need to carry the auto glass motor vehicle repairer license with you, no matter you are part-time work, mobile work, sub-contractors, or working in a partnership or a company.

If you do not apply for it, you will offence the law. The penalty notice will be about $5,500 – $11,000 for any auto glass business with unlicensed work.

Everyone can apply for this license only if you are:

  • At least be age of 18
  • Considered to be fit and proper to hold the licence
  • Not be a controlled member of a declared organisation
  • Not be disqualified from holding a licence
  • Not be bankrupt
  • Have approval from the relevant local council
  • Not been found guilty, for 10 years period, of a motor vehicle stealing or dishonesty offence
  • Have sufficient financial resources to carry on the business

What is auto glass motor vehicle repair (glazing work)?

The auto glass repair or automotive glazing work means the work that needs individuals who can repair or replace windscreens or other glass of motor vehicles.

There are many situations that can lead to car window damages in daily life, from a flying stone chip to severe weather conditions and more. When you find there is any chip, crack or scratch on your windscreen, you need to have auto glass repairs or replacement immediately. Repair or replacement depends on the size and sever lever of damages on your car window.

Any other works on auto glass can be included in glazing work. Once you hold the auto glass glazing work, you must have the auto glass motor vehicle repairer license from 1 November 2021 in NSW.

What is auto glass motor vehicle repairer license?

Auto glass motor vehicle repairer license defines the need to obtain recognition or certification and registration to undertake the auto glass related business activity.

There are three types of this business license which are 1 year, 3 years and 5 years license. You can apply for any of them and charge for different fees of applying the license. It should be noticed that if your license is going to be expired, you need to renew it on time. Once expired, you will not be allowed to carry on any auto glass related business.

Within three months from expired, you can request for the restore of your license. But if it is over three months, restore is not worked for you, and you should reapply for the license.

What is it mean with auto glass motor vehicle repairer license?

You must display the name and license number according to your license on a sign when you carry on the auto glass activities both on the shop and mobile service vehicles. All automotive glazing work should be completed in line with Australian Consumer Law, including finishing it on time, providing reasonable prices, repairing or replacing with care and skill.

Unlike the law in Western Australia, in NSW the auto glass motor vehicle repairer license holder is not enabled to do the repair work. The repairer license only means that you can operate related business. If you want to do the repair work, you must have related tradesperson certificates. But in Western Australia, you can both operate the business and do the repair if you have a motor vehicle repair certificate.

In NSW, from 1 November 2021, once you hold the auto glass motor vehicle repairer license in automotive glass industry, you will not be allowed to employ any individual who is uncertified, which is an offence. In other words, the employees of your business should hold a tradesperson certificate for classes of repair work or other relevant work they handle with. Or they can do the repair work as an apprentice or trainee with the supervision from certified repairers.

What is glazing tradesperson certificate?

From 1 November 2021, in NSW, a tradesperson’s certificate can be granted in the glazing work class. It requires at least a Certificate II qualification. If you have other tradesperson certificate for relevant class authorising to do the repair, you do not need to apply for certificate of this class.

As an apprentice or trainee, you do not have the qualification of obtaining a tradesperson’s certificate. However, when you participate in any chance of repair apprenticeship or traineeship, you can do repair work supervised by a tradesperson who holds a certificate for a relevant class of repair work.
